The Harare Polytechnic is the oldest journalism training school in Zimbabwe and in the 1980’s it was the only regional journalism training institution in Southern Africa.
The Polytechnic ideally focuses on teaching practical courses about print, radio and television journalism through a 2-year National Diploma course. It has a full time class of about 30 students and another of 20 part time students.
Offer places in for those seeking entry level education into the profession and the upskilling of working journalists. Students write a test and have to pass an oral interview before they are enrolled.
Diploma in Mass Communication.
Graduate Output: 40-50 students graduate each year.

School Of Journalism and Media Studies
Considered one of the best journalism schools in Africa, this university offers programs in Media Studies, Photojournalism, New Media, Television and Radio, Writing & Editing, and Design.
MA in Journalism and Media Studies – The Masters degree in Journalism and Media Studies is a coursework and mini-thesis qualification that can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students spend at least twelve months in residence to take the degree. Part-time students take the degree over two years with three visits to Rhodes each year. The format of the part-time degree courses creates access to higher education for people unable to take off a full year from work for residential study.
This Masters course aims to develop critical understanding and appreciation of conceptual and theoretical debates relating to media. Students are also required to conduct research and develop new knowledge in the field of media.
Candidates would normally be expected to have completed an Honours degree or a four-year undergraduate degree. However, consideration is also given to applicants with extensive media experience.

The Department of Journalism only offers Graduate study courses.
Courses appropriate for entry level education into the profession and upskilling those already working as journalists.
Acceptable Criteria- Career-entry: written exam and interview Mid-Career: written test for recognition of professional experience.
PGD-(BA Hons in Journalism and Media Studies) is for graduates in any field who wish to become journalists. students with a background in the humanities, arts, sciences, commerce, law and other faculties are encouraged.
Students do a rich mix of theoretical and hands-on practical work, such as producing a newspaper, an online site or running a radio broadcast, and will emerge with the skills and knowledge to operate in a newsroom. Only 20 students are selected a year after a written test and interview.
This degree is offered full-time only over one year.
The Mid-Career Honours Degree is for journalists who have worked in the profession for at least three years. It can be done full-time (one year) or part-time (two years). Students without a previous degree may enter by passing a special entrance test. All classes are held in the evening to accommodate working professionals.
In addition, certification Courses are offered for students who wish to do single courses for non-degree purposes. These are offered in a range of subjects useful to working or aspirant journalists, such as Radio Journalism, Finance Journalism, Media Law and Ethics, Creative Writing for Journalists, Creating Media, Design for the Media and Online Journalism.
The Masters Degree is for students who have a four-year degree in journalism, or a four-year degree and substantial journalism experience. The Masters can be done full-time (one year) or part-time (two years) and includes a significant work of original research. All classes are held in the evening to accommodate working professionals.

A number of Zimbabwean journalists have trained at City University. Located in the heart of London, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
City University offers Master’s Programmes in the following disciplines, MA/Diploma in Journalism with several pathways, Broadcast, Investigative Journalism, Magazine Journalism, Newspaper Journalism and TV and Current Affairs Journalism Pathway.
International Journalism, Political Campaigning, Creative Writing(non-fiction), Creative Writing (novels), Creative Writing(Plays and Screenplays), MA in Publishing Studies and a Masters in Electronic Publishing.
City also offers undergraduate programs in Journalism and Social Science, Journalism and Contemporary History. There is also a Research program in a Doctorate in Journalism.
