Media Defence Fund(Misa Zimbabwe)
Assists journalists facing legal challenges such as those who have been arrested or are facing threats of being arrested. Even those who are being sued in connection with their work as journalists, can get help under this fund.

SADC Journalists Under Fire Campaign
Formed in 2003, this project helps journalists in the 11 SADC countries who have been harassed, arrested or violated because of their work as journalists.
This program provided material help such as food for journalists arrested, legal help,, trauma counseling etc. The campaign also facilitates attachments for journalists in the region who need to take a breather from their countries. They also issues alerts, articles on any media freedom violations.

Canadian Journalists For Free Expression (Journalists in Distress Fund)
This is a Canadian non-governmental organization supported by Canadian journalists, that defends the rights journalists. The fund provides financial assistance to journalists under threat. Some of the funding is for medial costs arising from mistreatment, legal costs, emergency travel costs for journ’s escaping persecution.

Preference is given to journalists working in their home countries. Or those forced into exile.
Amount granted is normally between US$200 to $US 2 000.

Committee To Protect Journalists
The New York based organization runs a program to help journas who have been physically assaulted or need medical attention. Or those who need to go into hiding, or exile to escape threats. It also caters for the needs of those in prison. The program also helps refer journalists to opportunities in getting grants, fellowships and awards.

Hellman/Hammet Grants(administered by Human Rights Watch)
Help under this program is for journa’s who have been victims of political persecution and are in financial need. These grants o about US$1 000 to US$ 10 000 are awarded annually. The program takes nominations to the New York office of Human Rights Now.

Nominations should include biological information about the nominee, a list of the nominee’s published writing, a statement about the political persecution suffered and a statement of need.
